Library expands literacy program

14 May 2012

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River Library Services has extended their Better Beginnings infant literacy program to this year include kindergarten and pre-primary children.
Called Better Beginnings Plus, the new program aims to make reading fun and accessible for local children in their founding years of schooling.
Under the program children will receive free reading packs, including a book, a poster, a library bag, a reading folder and a booklet for children to record their reading experiences and a list of recommended children’s books.
“The Shire has participated in the Better Beginnings literacy program for babies and toddlers since 2006,” Shire librarian Rachael Drummond said.
“It’s very pleasing we can now offer the extended literacy program to children entering their schooling years.”
Already the Margaret River Community Kindy, the Margaret River Primary School and Cowaramup Primary School have signed on to join the program.
“Research shows that children’s early experiences with books are very important in their learning to read and write when they go to school,” Ms Drummond said.
“The interactive elements of this program make reading an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both parents and children.”
Families in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River will also have the opportunity to visit the Margaret River Library to borrow Discovery Backpacks as part of the program.
The backpacks include picture books, books and CDs, puppets, games and advice for parents to support shared reading at home.

The Better Beginnings Plus program is run by the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River in partnership with the State Library of Western Australia and Rio Tinto.
