Community development
Community development, also known as community building, can be described as a process that helps to strengthen a community and contributes to creating a sense of belonging and well being. It unites the efforts of people in the belief that by working together more can be achieved that will benefit all parts of the community.
Community development involves local people, community organisations, business and philanthropic organisations working together to achieve agreed social, economic and environmental outcomes.
Community development initiatives provide the community with:
- opportunities for participation/interaction;
- opportunities to be involved in local decision making;
- the capacity for collective action to achieve the development of new projects, activities and other opportunities;
- access to information and knowledge;
- opportunities for collaboration to achieve common goals;
- shared community pride and the development of neighbourhood capacities for problem solving.
The Shire’s Community Development area, in simple terms, aims to assist the community to reach its potential through the use of community development principles and practice.
To help guide this process, the Shire has produced the Community Development Plan 'Connected from Land to Sea’ 2008-2013.
CommunityCONNECT
In an effort to support and build greater strength and capacity within local community and not for profit groups, the Shire has developed CommunityCONNECT – a volunteer and community group support program. Visit the CommunityCONNECT page for more information.
